🎂 Happy birthday to our members Connie Rogers, Nadine Dixon, Sharon Patterson, and Madison Turnbull!
This newsletter is 1,080 words, a 4-minute read.
1 big thing: A Euro summer experience in Plaza Midwood
A slice of the Italian coast is parked in a Plaza Midwood lot.
Why it matters: Bev, a new Prosecco bar in a vintage Airstream, lets you channel Euro summer at home, amid a travel season marked by soaring flight prices and extended TSA wait times.
Catch up quick: The owner of Moxie Mercantile quietly opened Bev this past winter, serving Prosecco drinks out of the restored 1960s trailer parked next door, Unpretentious Palate first reported.
- A "proseccheria" is a bar dedicated to Prosecco, Italy's signature sparkling wine, and Bev claims to be the first of its kind in the U.S.
- Owner Michelle Castelloe got the idea after a trip to Italy and named it after her godmother.
What to expect: An open-air bar serving a dozen Proseccos by the bottle and seven by the glass, plus flights (four pours for $30) and spritzes (like Hugo, Aperol and Limoncello).
- Spritzes are $14. Glasses of Prosecco range $11-$14, with bottles from $34-$90.
The vibe: Glasses clink, chips crunch and corks pop. Yellow and white striped umbrellas cover tightly packed café tables and those classic bistro chairs you'd see outside a café in France or Italy.
- If you can't snag a patio table (there's about 10 and a longer community-style table), there's a second trailer for extra seating.
2. ⛳️ Disc golf mecca
Charlotte's reputation as a disc golf hub is strengthening as major tournaments, course growth and out-of-town players fuel its rise as a national destination.
Driving the news: Charlotte is hosting the Queen City Classic this weekend at Hornets Nest Park.
- The tournament features 164 pro players from around the world and 190 top amateurs.
- Organizers expect more than 1,000 spectators each day.
- "Hornets Nest is one of the most traveled to courses in the country," says Ethan Durland, VP of the Charlotte Disc Golf Club. "Last year, about 60% of the people who played Hornets Nest were from over 50 miles outside of Charlotte."
Zoom in: What makes Charlotte special isn't just the pros; it's accessibility.
- Nearly all local courses are free and open to the public.
- You can get started with about $20 worth of discs.
What's next: Leaders are working to bring a permanent Disc Golf Pro Tour headquarters to the city, Durland says. There are also plans to relocate the Disc Golf Hall of Fame to Charlotte, along with a dedicated course and clubhouse.
3. Top contenders to replace Berger
The behind-the-scenes jostling to replace Phil Berger as leader of the North Carolina Senate is now out in the open, a day after he conceded primary defeat to Rockingham County Sheriff Sam Page.
Why it matters: Berger's long tenure has shaped Republican power in Raleigh, and his successor will determine whether that influence — and party unity — holds.
Between the lines: Berger has been Senate president pro tempore since 2011, when Republicans rode the Tea Party wave and cemented GOP control of the state General Assembly that continues to this day. Over the years, Berger has led the Senate with a top-down approach, becoming arguably the most influential Republican and politician in the state.
- Whether someone else can wield that level of influence is an open question facing the party.
- They will need to be adept at raising money to maintain that advantage, after Senate Republicans spent heavily on Berger's primary.
What they're saying: "We do not know what it's like to have Republican control [in North Carolina] without Phil Berger in control of that party," Chris Cooper, a political science professor at Western Carolina University, tells Axios.
