1 big thing: ⚔️ D&D more than just a fad
The Temple's Edge is located between Santé and Carolina Beer Temple. Photo courtesy of Ben Jarrell
The Temple's Edge opened in early August in downtown Matthews combining two very geek-friendly hobbies — craft beer and tabletop gaming, Axios contributor Ben Jarrell writes.
Why it matters: It’s cooler than ever to be a geek. There's an overarching movement for people to be comfortable showing their true selves and a place like The Temple's Edge embraces that ethos.
The big picture: The Temple’s Edge ownership believes that enough people live in our community who like to drink good beer and surround themselves with vintage Star Wars and G.I. Joe action figures while playing tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons.
- Location: 189 N. Trade Street in Matthews.
- Hours: Monday 3-9pm, Tuesday-Wednesday 2-9pm, Thursday-Friday 12-9pm, Saturday 9-9pm and Sunday 12-8pm.
- There's a grand opening planned for Saturday, September 10, per WSOC.

NoDa Company Canteen opens in Camp North End today, Axios' Alexis Clinton writes.
Context: Co-founders Scott Lindsley and Joey Hewell opened NoDa Company Canteen as a pop-up in 2018, now it's a bigger, more permanent location, with indoor and outdoor seating.
- The space has an industrial and tropical vibe, with murals painted by Hewell.
Details: The menu includes local beers, wine, sangrias and frozen drinks.
- Location: Camp North End's Boileryard at 1824 Statesville Ave.
- Hours: Wednesday and Thursday 12-9pm, Friday 12-10pm, Saturday 11-10pm and Sunday 11-8pm.

Charlotte's first seltzery is teaming up with local coffee shop Queen City Grounds to open its second taproom.
Driving the news: The combo space, called The Landing at Fourth Ward, opens today inside the existing Queen City Grounds coffee shop in Uptown.
Details: The Queen City Grounds side of the existing space didn't change much. But you'll notice a new bar and fridges for grab-and-go beverages on the left side of the space, where the Summit Seltzery bar lives.

4. 🏘 “Zero down payment” mortgages
The program launched in late August and the bank has seen “significant interest already,” a Bank of America spokesperson told Axios. Photo: Brianna Crane/Axios
Bank of America recently announced “zero down payment” loans for first-time homebuyers in predominantly Black and Hispanic neighborhoods who meet certain income requirements, Axios’ Emily Peck writes.
Why it matters: If the programs proliferate, “then they do have the ability to actually make a meaningful dent in the homeownership gap,” Urban Institute research assistant Liam Reynolds, who co-wrote a piece about these types of programs earlier this year, shared with Axios.
Details: Instead of potential buyers fronting money for a down payment, BofA is offering grants up to $10,000 for Charlotteans who qualify to put down on a home, Axios' Bri Crane explains.
- This means buyers aren’t financing the entire cost of the home, and they get “immediate equity in the home,” a spokesperson told Axios.
