Ilhan Omar makes history as first Somali-American elected to Congress

Minnesota Democratic State Rep. Ilhan Omar has won the race for Minnesota's 5th congressional district, replacing Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.).

Why it matters: Omar is making history as she becomes the first Somali-American elected to Congress. Omar is also one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress along with Rashida Tlaib, who ran unopposed in Michigan.
