A new SMoCA installation displays photos and videos inside a large-scale model home rather than neat gallery walls.
The big picture: The source material mostly comes from Buckeye and the West Valley, but the questions the work of artist Alejandro Acierto raises — about housing growth and preserving the desert — are familiar ones in Scottsdale.
- "What are we displacing? What are we valuing when we build homes for ourselves?" those are some things Acierto says he hopes people think about.
Zoom in: The installation is designed to feel like a house being built, with photos hanging from exposed studs and sheathing.
- Visitors move through spaces corresponding to rooms, including a "living room" where a video plays on a television.
- There's even a front "sales office" outside the model home with reference books, wallpaper and video.
Driving the news: SMoCA will hold a free opening celebration at 7pm Friday. RSVP required.
