Poppy Bakeshop brings sweet treats to Liberty Station

• Poppy's owner, Juan Lopez, is the former Wayfarer assistant manager. And though that beloved La Jolla bakery may never expand, his pop-up is at least satisfying this hungry writer's quest for a comparable fruity treat.

Best bites: The passion fruit and banana knot with cajeta has soft, buttery dough and a flavorful, bright fruity filling.

• It did require several napkins, and I'm sorry to the stranger sharing my table who had to watch me eat it.
• We also ordered the mango turnover with honey mascarpone, and I've thrice ordered whichever savory bialy is in stock.
• I paired my order with a hot vanilla latte from the Moniker counter literally three feet away.

Fun fact: Lopez sources both the mango and passion fruit he uses in his products from Heritage Family Farms at the Pacific Beach or North Park farmer's market.

The menu changes monthly based on what Lopez is craving, what's in season, and what's most colorful at the market, he says.

• Translation: Don't get too attached to anything.

Prices start around $3.50 and max out around $9.00 for the more labor-intensive or expensive-ingredient snacks.

Stop by Poppy Bakeshop on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 7am to 12:30pm. Just don't get there before me and take that last passion fruit knot.
