Kearny Mesa's former Sheraton hotel gets a big makeover

The intrigue: Alps Group bought the Sheraton in 2023. They picked the location mostly because of its 20-acre site, but also in part because Kearny Mesa is building lots of multifamily housing, owner and operator Saahil Khandwala told Axios.

• The area has historically been known more for office, industrial and commercial uses, and the boost in housing is a sign the neighborhood is becoming more mixed-use and bringing more people into the neighborhood beyond the traditional workday, he said.

Zoom out: Alps Group has redone other local hotels including Holiday Express & Suites in Carlsbad.

What's next: The Goldfinch will open early next year.
