Two new gorillas join San Diego Zoo and Safari Park

• Matumaini (mah-too-mahEE-nee), a 33-year-old western lowland gorilla, joined the safari park's family troop as a silverback. He moved here from a zoo in Kansas.

TIL: Silverback isn't a type of gorilla species, but a term to describe the silver hair male gorillas get as they age. You know, George Clooney-style.

Zoom in: Kitoko, whose name means "beautiful" or "handsome" in the African languages of Lingala and Kikongo, is "adventurous, energetic, and playful," according to the zoo.

• He's at the age where he would naturally leave the family to join up with other young adult males.
• He will join brothers Denny and Eukba to form a bachelor group.

Matumaini is "a patient, caring and socially intelligent gorilla who has proven to be a good mentor to those younger than him," according to the zoo.

• He will join a group of females including Imani, Jessica, Kamilah, Leslie and Joanne.
• Silverbacks are the leaders of the troop who make important decisions and ensure their safety, according to the zoo.
