San Diego Magazine's new editor bets on a print revival

The new editor of San Diego Magazine thinks there is still life in print.
The big picture: The magazine has a long history in the city, publishing lifestyle, real estate and dining stories and documenting local character for about 40,000 subscribers and a larger digital audience.
Driving the news: Emma Veidt just edited her second full issue of the magazine, the Best of San Diego issue, and said it has the biggest page count in the last five years.
Flashback: The magazine has been in print since 1948.
- It stopped publishing and laid off nearly its entire staff in 2020, but then longtime food critic Troy Johnson and his wife, Claire, bought the magazine and started publication again.
Veidt grew up in North County and told Axios her mom has subscribed to the magazine since the 1990s.
- Now that she's at the helm, she wants to focus on the people, places and businesses that make San Diego what it is.
- "I really want to have a priority on inclusivity and supporting everyone, and also not just focusing on the San Diego city, but getting all the way up to the broader stretches of San Diego County," she said.
Yes, but: She has to balance that with the magazine's higher-end audience, which fuels luxury advertisers and partner content.
- "As long as we keep that balance of the highbrow and lowbrow, then I will be able to make everyone happy," she said.
Veidt is 27, and said she thinks print magazines are seeing a resurgence among her generation.
- "It's an art piece and it's also journalism in a way that I don't think many other forms of journalism have," she said.
