San Diego returns to top 10 for most expensive U.S. rents

We've earned the dubious distinction of being back on the top 10 list for most expensive rents in the country.
The big picture: Our median one-bedroom rent grew 1.4% to $2,250 last month, according to Zumper.
- That landed us back on the highest rent list just under Washington DC at $2,270, but well below New York City (#1) at $4,560.
Zoom in: We've been hovering near the top 10 list for awhile, according to Zumper. In the spring, when rents were down slightly, we sat at 11th or 12th place.
Context: Median rents have fallen since the double-digit gains that came in 2021 and 2022.
- And the median rent for a two-bedroom stayed flat at $3,000.
"So, this month's uptick is a single data point, which could just be a batch of pricier new-construction apartments starting to lease up or a temporary dip in cheaper listings," Saad Asad, spokesperson for the housing advocacy group California YIMBY, told Axios. "It's too soon to tell if it changes the year-long trend, especially since two-bedroom didn't move at all.
