San Diego faces dangerous heat and rip currents this weekend

By the numbers: The heat warning begins 10am on Friday through 8pm Sunday.

• Temperatures will be in the high 70s at the coast, in the 90s inland and could reach 120 in Borrego Springs this weekend.
• Ocean waves will be 5-8 feet Thursday, per the National Weather Service.

The risk of rip currents is also high, the weather service said.

• Rip currents don't pull people underwater, but keep pushing them away from shore, according to the city.
• People can drown in a rip current because they can't swim back to shore.

Threat level: Two people were found dead in the ocean this week. A man drowned while swimming near South Carlsbad State Beach, and a woman was found near La Jolla Shores Beach. Her cause of death is unknown.

• Last weekend, San Diego lifeguards made more than 450 rescues, mostly for people in rip currents, per the Union-Tribune.

Tips: Ask a lifeguard where to swim and stay where you can touch bottom.

• If you get caught in a rip current, swim parallel to the shore, not against the current.
• Float on your back or tread water.
• Wave to a lifeguard for help.
