Starting Monday, 13 bathrooms will be closed around Mission Bay due to budget cuts.
Why it matters: That's almost half of the 28 bathrooms in the park.
Driving the news: The city waited until after the holiday weekend to close the toilets, city spokesperson Matt Hoffman tells Axios. They are:
- De Anza South
- Crown Point South
- El Carmel Point
- North Cove
- Ski Beach North
- Ski Beach Middle
- Vacation Isle West
- Bonita Cove East
- Ventura Point
- Hospitality Point
- South Shores
- Playa Pacifica III
- Tecolote North
State of play: The closures alternate bathrooms around Mission Bay Park. The cuts will save $546,000, mostly in cleaning and maintenance costs, according to the city.
Meanwhile, four portable bathrooms closed last week at homeless service providers downtown:
- 119 17th St.
- 1300 Broadway
- 1572 National Ave.
- 1845 Island Ave.
💠Claire's thought bubble: I run all the time in Mission Bay, and while there are a lot of bathrooms, they're pretty far apart.
- It's going to be tough to be at a place like Ventura Point, for example, and have to leave the beach and walk to Bahia Point for the bathroom.
- But I'm grateful they didn't close the beloved Runner's Bathroom.
