The Padres want fans to clock in from Petco Park for a "Remote Work Wednesday" theme game against the Cincinnati Reds.
Why it matters: A midday baseball game with a beer in hand seems like a great place to take video calls, answer emails and finish that slide deck your boss has hassling you about.
Zoom in: Buy a ticket ($35+) near Section 324, the unofficial office, and get $10 in Friar Funds for lunch at the 1:10pm game.
- "Bring your laptop, glove, and whatever helps drive shareholder value," local remote work organizer Scotty Muirhead posted on Instagram.
- The dress code: "Corporate up top. San Diego beach day below."
The big picture: Muirhead's pitch is part of a "work from anywhere" social media schtick that's helped him build an online following beyond San Diego.
- He's set up his laptop, desk, office chair and cardboard sign at local beaches, Sunset Cliffs, Cafe Coyote in Old Town, and even paragliding at Torrey Pines. Because why not?
- He invited locals to join him in Pacific Beach one Friday this spring. So many people showed up that when he tried to host another meetup at La Jolla Shores, the city (aka HR) shut it down, saying he needed a permit.
This time, he went even bigger and got the Padres on board.
The bottom line: San Diego has a fresh chance to prove its chill reputation is well-earned, and that some locals are more loyal Padres fans than corporate employees.
