If you want to get a jump start on our Bucket List Challenges, hiking Cowles Mountain is an easy way to start.
The big picture: Hiking Cowles can sometimes feel like waiting in line for a Disneyland ride.
Yes, but: Not if you hike the back trail.
Zoom in: There are three other trailheads (Barker Way, Mesa and Big Rock) that lead you to the top of Cowles, and none of them are nearly as busy as the main one on Golfcrest Drive.
The details: Start at the Big Rock Trailhead (8282 Mesa Rd, Santee) for a slightly longer but far less crowded hike.
- 5 miles out and back
- Last section is on a fire road, so it's a steeper climb
- Loop back on Barker Way Trail if you want a slightly longer hike
You can also hike Barker Way, but will still join the crowds on the switchbacks.
💠Claire's thought bubble: Whenever I have the time, this is definitely my preferred way to hike Cowles. You can also add on Pyle Peak and really make it a long hike!
