Garage Kitchen + Bar, downtown
Rating: 4. This big but bland burger took the prize in terms of size and price point, but it lacked flavor.
Price: $6 with fries during happy hour.
Kaiser Permanente Hospital cafeteria, Kearny Mesa
Rating: 4. The flame-grilled flavor of this standard burger makes the medical center an unexpectedly good lunch spot.

Salsa Brava, City Heights
Rating: 4. A surprisingly hearty quarter-pounder that's a good value.
Price: $2.50, or $5 combo with fries and a drink.
The Casino Inn, Alpine
Rating: 4. It's worth the drive to down a few of these off-menu, grilled, double-patty smash burgers.
Price: $3, but it's going up soon.
Common Theory, Convoy
Rating: 2. This burger needed more seasoning and substance and wasn't worth the trip.
Price: $6 during happy hour.
💭 Kate's thought bubble: My go-to for a juicy, affordable smash burger that doesn't skimp on flavor is the $7.99 All-American at Eat Crispy Burger. Make it a combo with the half-onion-rings/half-fries side and a drink for another $4.99.
- The locally owned restaurant has locations in Encinitas, La Jolla, Convoy, National City and Oceanside.
