Historic settlement for San Diego teen shot by police

• It eclipses the $27 million that Minneapolis paid to the family of George Floyd, who was killed by a city police officer in 2020.

Context: Wilson was at the Santa Fe train station in downtown San Diego on Jan. 28 when a teenager fired a gun at him, according to the San Diego Police Department.

• Wilson ran away and was shot in the back by SDPD Officer Daniel Gold II. Wilson died later at a hospital.

• After mediation, the City Council voted 6–1 in closed session in September to approve the settlement.

• San Diego police declined to comment on the settlement but confirmed that Gold is on paid administrative duty and currently not on patrol.

What they're saying: In a statement to City News Service, Foster called on Mayor Todd Gloria and Police Chief Scott Wahl to do better.
