Your driveway newspaper's glow up

The newspapers you find on your driveway and in sidewalk stands are getting a new look.

The big picture: Seven community newspapers were acquired this year by Newswell, a nonprofit based at Arizona State University. Their redesign is meant to help them match the look of the larger news organization, editor and general manager (and former Axios reporter) Andrew Keatts told Axios.

Newswell also operates the Times of San Diego news site.

Zoom in: Zoom in: The redesign aims to give the papers a fresh look, unify styles and reflect community commitment, Keatts said.

Behind the scenes: One of the biggest changes is the size of the paper.

The papers will switch to what's called a "skinny tab," with teases to stories on the front page and the full story inside.
This will also save money on printing costs, which can be invested in reporting, Keatts said.

What's next: Four of the papers — La Jolla Village News, Beach & Bay Press, Downtown News and Uptown News — have debuted the new design.

Peninsula Beacon and Mission Times Courier will show off their new looks on Friday.
The La Mesa Courier will look different starting Nov. 28.
