The San Diego Wave FC retired Alex Morgan's jersey at Snapdragon Stadium during a ceremony following the team's 3-0 loss to the Houston Dash yesterday.
Why it matters: Morgan is the first Wave player to have a jersey retired, and there's now a banner with her name and Number 13 hanging in the northwest corner of the stadium below the Toyota Terrace.
She received a minute-long standing ovation while fans chanted her name.
What she's saying: "To the young girls and boys in the stadium, this wasn't a possibility for 7-year-old Alex," Morgan said at the ceremony.
She dreamed of playing soccer, but "not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined standing up here seeing my number get retired, because it just wasn't possible. And now it is," she said.
