New La Jolla overlook offers stunning sunset views

There's a new spot in La Jolla to enjoy San Diego's captivating sunsets, thanks to a local resident who wanted to make a popular viewpoint more accessible.

Why it matters: It could become one of your favorite places to go for golden hour.

Zoom in: UCSD recently opened the Brian & Nancy Malk Sunset Overlook, featuring a deck-like platform, benches and a picnic table to watch the sun sink down into the Pacific.

It's right off of the steep, winding La Jolla Shores Drive above Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
New pathways and designated ADA parking, in addition to street parking, make it easier to get to.

Between the lines: Brian Malk, who lives in La Jolla Shores, proposed the concept to UCSD in 2020 and the family paid for the campus project, which was completed in July after several months of construction, according to the university.

The intrigue: San Diego was recently crowned the top destination in the U.S. to watch sunsets based on social media data.
