Driving the news: Some Republic Services sanitation employees stopped working last week in solidarity with strikers in Boston who are demanding higher pay.
Why it matters: Residents should still put their bins out as usual, but since Republic is the city's only trash company, pickup may take a couple days.
State of play: Republic has brought in trucks and drivers from Arizona and other parts of California to help with residential and commercial trash service. Those crews are prioritizing hospitals and nursing homes.
The Chula Vista City Council held a special meeting Monday, and gave the city manager the green light to declare a state of emergency by Thursday, which would allow city workers to assist with trash pickup.
Flashback: In December 2021, local Republic workers went on a month-long strike over contract negotiations that prompted a public health emergency and city crews stepped in.
Zoom out: As contract negotiations continue, thousands of employees with the Teamsters labor union have walked off the job or are honoring picket lines in cities nationwide, including Seattle, the Bay Area and Southern California.
