The San Diego International Airport was awarded a $15 million grant for its Quieter Home Program to reduce noise in nearby homes.
Why it matters: Residents in about 250 homes will be able to get some relief from the roar of planes with new windows, doors and ventilation systems installed for free.
Zoom in: Homeowners in neighborhoods under the flight path — including Bankers Hill, Point Loma, Ocean Beach, South Park and Golden Hill — can apply for the program, go through an assessment process and get placed on a wait list.
Those with the loudest noise and longest length of ownership are prioritized.
More than 5,000 single-family and multi-family residences have been treated since the program started.
Reality check: It can take years to be selected for construction.
