Machado makes mark on Padres' history with 2,000th hit

Manny Machado joined the 2,000-hit club Monday night, then blasted a home run for hit number 2,001 four innings later.

Why it matters: The milestone further cements Machado's place in Padres history, making him just the sixth player ever in the franchise to reach the mark.

The other Padres to notch 2,000 hits are Mike Piazza, Steve Garvey, Graig Nettles, Garry Templeton and Tony Gwynn.

By the numbers: Machado is fifth all time in hits recorded while wearing a Padres uniform, and leads the club in home runs.

Between the lines: Earlier this year, Machado hit his 350th career home run, and Monday became one of 11 players in league history to reach 350 homers and 2,000 hits by their age-32 season.

Eight of those 11 reached the Hall of Fame.

What's next: Machado could join the 3,000 hits club by averaging about 115 hits per year for the remainder of his Padres contract, which runs through 2033, according to MLB.com.
