San Diego has several events to celebrate Juneteenth, which commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas learned they had been freed — two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
The big picture: Celebrations of the new federal holiday are growing nationwide this year as civil rights, diversity, equity and inclusion programs and discussions on racism face scrutiny.
Here's how to enjoy Black history, culture and excellence on Thursday and through the weekend:
Juneteenth Summer Kick-Off BBQ
This free, family-friendly event includes surf lessons, a beach run, panel discussion, an African drum circle, volleyball tournament, yoga, games and barbecue hosted by Paddle for Peace.
- When and where: Saturday, 8am-4pm at North Kellogg Park in La Jolla Shores
Cooper Family Juneteenth Celebration
The annual free event features live music and DJs, Black businesses and local food vendors, and a kids zone.
- When and where: Saturday, 11am-6:30pm at Memorial Community Park in Logan Heights
Juneteenth Community Block Party
Enjoy live music, spoken word, local Black-owned vendors, food, fashion, live art and more at this free event hosted by Louisiana Purchase.
- When and where: Thursday, 12-6pm on Louisiana Street in North Park
Black Arts Festival
The Diversionary Theatre is showcasing Black music, dance and art with a series of performances, exhibitions and a gospel brunch.
- When and where: Thursday-Sunday in University Heights
Night at the Black Museum
Tour the Casa Del Rey Moro African Latin Museum and enjoy food, drinks and a live DJ at this community fundraiser.
- When and where: Thursday, 5-8pm in Old Town
Juneteenth Sister Circle
This wellness event is a "sacred gathering" focused on Black women's healing, health and peace at the Movement Matters Collective.
- When and where: Thursday, 6-8pm in Golden Hill
Gossip Grill BBQ Cookout
The Hillcrest bar and restaurant for queer women is hosting a cookout with soul food, live music by DJ Neek and a comedy show.
