East County arts community launches new festival with El Cajon's Artivál

State of play: The June 7 festival runs from 10am to 6pm and will have interactive installations and exhibitions from more than 50 artists, plus six hours of live music and a beer and wine garden.

• Catch local musicians Cassie B, a pop and funk performer who often covers Taylor Swift, at 11:30am, and Kimba Light, a Latin and Afro-Caribbean funk act, at 2:45.

What they're saying: Chris Berg, engagement manager for the city of El Cajon, told Axios in an email they were excited to host a festival while East County is enjoying the summer, but the coast is plagued by June Gloom.

• Representatives from downtown galleries started meeting in January, he said, about how they could highlight the city's growing art scene.
• "East County has never hosted an event quite like this, and it's definitely overdue," said Berg.

Fun fact: El Cajon's Olaf Wieghorst Museum and Western Heritage Center was named the sixth best Western art museum in the country by True West magazine in 2020.
