San Diego to host 2025 AVP League matches at Viejas Arena

Viejas Arena is about to get sandy for professional beach volleyball matches.
State of play: The arena will serve as a venue for the 2025 AVP League, bringing the sport's top athletes to compete in San Diego for a two-day event June 6-7.
- Tickets range from $40 for general admission to $162 for sideline VIP seating.
- The teams won't be playing at Frontwave in Oceanside this year.
The big picture: The AVP league has grown alongside the sport, which has taken off at the college level over the past decade.
How it works: Four of the league's eight teams, made up of a men's and women's duo, will each play at the venue. Cities go head-to-head, so there's a total of eight matches each weekend.
- The men's and women's duos both compete over eight weeks across the country.
- The team with the best combined record at the end of the regular season is the city team champion. But the top six men's and women's duos will qualify for the league championship based on their individual records.
Zoom in: The San Diego Smash won the title last year in the league's inaugural season.
- The men's duo: Olympians Miles Evans and Chase Budinger, a San Diego native and former NBA player.
- The women's duo: Team USA's Toni Rodriguez and Geena Urango, last year's AVP MVP.
What's next: The 2025 season starts May 23-24 in Palm Beach, Florida and ends with the League Championship in Chicago Aug. 30-31.
