California schools get a relatively large share of federal revenue on a per-capita basis, per new Census data.
Why it matters: Federal funding for local school districts is on shaky ground as the Trump administration looks to cut spending and its financial heft to influence school curriculum and other decisions.
By the numbers: K-12 schools in California received $409 per person in the 2023 fiscal year, Census data shows.
That's above the national average of nearly $359 per person.
The big picture: The U.S. Department of Education sent letters last month to state K-12 agencies requiring them to comply with the Trump administration's anti-DEI policies in order to maintain their federal funding.
