Lower speed limits coming to busy San Diego streets

Zoom in: The new posted speed limits will drop to 20mph or 25mph in designated "Business Activity Districts" in North Park, Hillcrest, City Heights, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, Old Town and Mission Hills.

• That includes sections of Newport Avenue, 30th Street, University Avenue, Mission Boulevard, El Cajon Boulevard and other streets.

Between the lines: These streets were eligible for reductions under a recent state law that gave cities more authority to set speed limits in particular corridors based on safety concerns or business activity.

• They were identified based on community input from residents, traffic safety advocates and local business owners.

What they're saying: "This is about more than just numbers on a sign. It is about protecting lives, creating walkable neighborhoods, and responding to the fear we hear from our constituents every day," Councilmember Stephen Whitburn said in a statement.

What's next: The new speed limits will likely go into effect this summer.
