Dexcom U offering more NIL deals for athletes with diabetes

San Diego-based Dexcom, a leading diabetes technology company known for its wearable glucose monitors, is expanding its NIL presence in the NCAA.

Why it matters: Dexcom U is a one-of-a-kind name, image and likeness program designed to give college athletes with diabetes a platform as role models, community support and devices that help them compete at the highest levels.

Driving the news: This week, the company launched its first nationwide open call for athletes to become Dexcom U ambassadors for the program's fourth season.

Athletes, coaches, family and friends can nominate candidates online through May 23.
Those selected will join eight returning athletes, and be invited to the program's first signing day this summer.

Zoom in: The athletes use Dexcom's continuous glucose monitoring technology to manage their diabetes during training or games with real-time glucose data sent to their phone or watch that can be shared with athletic trainers or coaches.

The company did not provide details on how much athletes might be paid through these deals.

The big picture: The NCAA's updated NIL policy allowed Dexcom to expand its brand ambassador program to college athletics in 2022.

So far, 30 athletes across 15 sports have participated.

The intrigue: Last summer, Dexcom U hosted a sports camp at the San Diego Wave training grounds where local middleschoolers with diabetes trained with college and pro athletes.
