What he's saying: Trump's plans for "wider, indiscriminate, massive deportation across the country" would be "incompatible with Catholic doctrine," McElroy said at a news conference on Monday.

Zoom in: McElroy, 70, has led the San Diego diocese since 2015 and became a cardinal in 2022.

• Under his leadership, the diocese filed for bankruptcy last June after facing hundreds of legal claims from alleged sexual abuse victims dating back more than 50 years.
• That action offers the diocese financial protection as it compensates victims, while maintaining operations of its parishes, charities and schools — one of which is struggling to stay afloat.

What's next: McElroy is set to replace retiring cardinal Wilton Gregory in D.C. in March.
