Old Town, the city's first neighborhood, now has one of San Diego's iconic gateway signs.
Zoom in: The iron arch stretches across San Diego Avenue at Twiggs Street welcoming visitors to the state historic park that marks the birthplace of California.
It features stucco columns and intricate designs of hawks, mission bells and wagon wheels representing four significant eras in San Diego's history: the Kumeyaay, Spanish, Mexican, and American periods.
Driving the news: The sign was installed earlier this month, and officially unveiled at a ceremony Thursday.
Local leaders also dedicated the street to Diane Powers — an entrepreneur who owns Old Town staples Bazaar del Mundo and Casa Guadalajara.
