Lightscape makes San Diego Botanic Garden glow during the holidays

Driving the news: Opening Friday, visitors can walk through the 37-acre outdoor garden on a colorful, illuminated one-mile path from Nov. 15 through Jan. 5.

• Popular dates can sell out, so get tickets ahead of time.

Zoom in: This custom-designed trail has 20 new installations including a giant flame skimmer dragonfly, neon tunnels, twinkling flower fields and musical light shows.

• The returning fan favorites are glowing California poppies that dangle from trees and a cathedral of white lights that make for a perfect family photo op.
• People can also buy seasonal treats and drinks along the trail.

The big picture: The event over the last 10 years has transformed spaces in cities around the world, including Chicago, New York and London.

• The San Diego Botanic Garden is producing this unique Lightscape show with Sony Music and Culture Creative.

If you go: Tickets range from $13-$34, depending on the dates. It's more expensive to go right around Thanksgiving, weekends, and the two weeks before and after Christmas.

• It takes about an hour to walk through.
• Parking is plentiful and fairly painless, but it costs $10-$25 per vehicle.
