Manny Machado sets Padres home run record

Manny Machado is now the Padres all-time leader in home runs.

Driving the news: Machado's two-run homer in the sixth inning Tuesday was his 164th in six seasons with the Padres and his 26th of 2024. The Padres defeated the Mariners 7-3 in Seattle.

Machado's dinger broke a tie atop the franchise leaderboard with first baseman and outfielder Nate Colbert, who was a Padre from 1969 through 1974.

The big picture: Machado signed with the Padres in 2019 and has led them to two playoff appearances since. The franchise failed to qualify for the postseason for 12 consecutive seasons before his arrival.

Fun fact: In 1972, Colbert hit five home runs during a double header, among the greatest days for a hitter in league history.

What's next: The Padres are off Thursday before a three-game series against the Giants in San Francisco this weekend amid a tight playoff race.
