How to check out California state parks with a San Diego library card

How it works: Residents can check out a free vehicle day-use pass at local libraries to visit more than 200 state parks.

• You need a library card, and passes are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
• Return the pass within 14 days to the same branch.

Fun fact: You can also check out a backpack with field guides, binoculars, a magnifying glass, a compass and more tools for exploring.

Flashback: The library parks pass program was scheduled to be cut from the state budget earlier this year, but advocates pushed lawmakers to restore funding for it through December 2025.

The intrigue: The California State Park Adventure Pass provides free entry to 54 parks for fourth-graders and their families and friends.

• The Golden Bear Pass gives families being helped by CalWORKs a free, year-round park pass.
