San Diego skateboarder Tate Carew missed the podium in the park final at the 2024 Paris Olympics but still came home with some hardware.
Why it matters: Carew was among the athletes who escorted the Olympic flag off the plane from Paris with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass when it arrived Monday at LAX.
What he's saying: "I'm very honored to be a part of all of it," Carew told Axios. "That plane just being full of the greatest U.S. athletes… is pretty sick."
Going to his first Olympics was "one of the greatest experiences of my life" despite not earning a medal, and he's "feeling very motivated for LA."
What's next: In preparation for his run at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Carew will be skating "anything and everything" with friends at some of his favorite parks in Clairemont and Linda Vista, on Tony Hawk's vert ramp or at the training facility in Vista.
1 beach rec to go: Growing up in Point Loma, it's no surprise Carew's favorite local spot is Sunset Cliffs.
