Here in San Diego: Palm Canyon trail

🎉 Congrats to Luisa P., who was among the handful of readers who recognized Palm Canyon in Balboa Park in yesterday's photo.

The big picture: Palm Canyon, easily accessible via the Alcazar Garden parking lot, is home to more than 450 palms, including the Mexican variety that has defined the area since 1912.

• Kate Sessions, known as the Mother of Balboa Park, planned and planted the canyon, even if modern botanists have since noted that Sessions planted exotic species that threatened native plants.

If you go: Start at the sightly wooden footbridge from the Alcazar Garden parking lot into the canyon, then follow the Palm Canyon trail to the Old Cactus Garden, behind the Balboa Park Club.
