Logan Edra, aka Logistx, is breaking onto the Olympic stage — literally.
Why it matters: The 21-year-old dancer who grew up in Chula Vista will compete with Team USA in breaking when the sport makes its Olympic debut this month in Paris.
The big picture: The International Olympic Committee has approved four new sports — breaking, sport climbing, skateboarding and surfing — as part of an effort to make the games more gender balanced and youth focused.
What they're saying: "People are just going to have so much fun watching us," Edra told Axios. "I just have a feeling we're going to steal the audience."
How it works: In the men's and women's breaking competitions, 16 b-boys and b-girls face off in one-on-one battles, integrating moves like windmills, the six-step and freezes.
- With signature styles, the athletes will improvise to the beat of the DJ's tracks to earn scores in three rounds.
- Judges determine the winner based on five categories: vocabulary, technique, execution, originality and musicality.
Team USA will have four entries — Jeffrey Louis and Victor Montalvo on the men's side, and Sunny Choi and Edra on the women's side.
Zoom in: Edra said she fell in love with hip-hop dance at an after-school church program in San Diego that her dad tricked her into joining.
- She started breaking at age 7, inspired by a b-girl teacher at Culture Shock dance academy in Mission Hills.
- "They've provided a foundation for a lot of great dancers globally," she said.
- At 16, Edra moved to Miami where she honed her skills to win major battles, including the b-girl championship at the 2021 Red Bull BC One World Final.
What's next: The Olympic breaking competitions are Aug. 9-10 in Paris.
