Sips & Snacks: Late-night pizza and burgers at the beach

There's a new spot to get a satisfying slice of pizza and smashburgers after a beach day or a late night out.

Dig in: The famous Prince St. Pizza opened a second San Diego location in Pacific Beach on July 4 at the Mission + Garnet complex, where food hall stands closed this spring.

L.A.'s iconic Irv's Burgers opened in the space next door the same day.
Both have walk-up windows that are open until 3am on weekends.

Best bites: Prince St.'s specialty is Sicilian-style square pizza that I tried at a media preview event.

The Naughty Pie — spicy vodka sauce with prosciutto, pepperoni, mozzarella, ricotta and Zab's hot honey — is my favorite.
If you prefer Neapolitan style, go with the Fancy Prince — a margherita pizza — or the Green Machine with pesto, ricotta and black olives.
At Irv's, the Best Burger on The Menu earned its name.

Fun facts: Both restaurants are known for attracting A-list celebrities over the years, and Prince St.'s walls are decorated with framed photos of stars picking up pies.

If you go: The two eateries are steps from the beach and designed for quick counter service, plus there's indoor and outdoor seating.

Irv's Burgers is open 8am-10pm Sunday-Thursday and serves breakfast.
Prince St. Pizza is open 11am-10pm Sunday-Thursday and 11am-3am Friday and Saturday.
