San Diego County supervisors consider walking away from Spring Valley tiny-house plan

• Vargas' office has said it is pursuing alternative locations for a similar project — and federal funding if the state pulls its money back.

Driving the news: The board will vote to rescind its March decision to place 150 "sleeping cabins" — with supporting structures like storage and restrooms — on a state Department of Transportation-owned lot on Jamacha Road near State Route 125.

• County supervisor Tara Lawson-Remer, a Democrat seeking re-election this fall, told Voice of San Diego she would vote against killing the project.

Between the lines: Newsom's statewide tiny-home plan was billed as a new tool for addressing homelessness — a relatively fast and cheap way to add badly needed supportive housing.

• But opposition to the project quickly gathered — as with proposals in Point Loma and Middletown — demonstrating that expedited environmental reviews and prefabricated structures don't negate political incentives for new housing for homeless residents.
