"The Outsiders" won best musical Sunday night during the 77th Tony Awards.
Why it matters: The new musical made its world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse last year before debuting on Broadway earlier this year.
The big picture: Based on the classic S.E. Hinton book about rival teen gangs in 1960s Oklahoma, the show was nominated for 12 Tony Awards.
Fun fact: Jack O'Brien, who ran San Diego's The Old Globe for 26 years, was also honored with a lifetime achievement award.
