Get a taste of the South at Rise

At Rise Southern Biscuits and Righteous Chicken, hungry customers can count on a fresh, buttery biscuit topped with country pork, egg and cheese that's greasy in the best way.

Dig in: The popular, fast-casual chain opened near SDSU's campus a few weeks ago and celebrated its grand opening Saturday.

  • Founded in Durham, North Carolina, Rise features biscuits that have been named among the best in the U.S. by Food & Wine.
  • There, people are either team Biscuitville or Bojangles, but this spot rises above the rest.

What to try: The Bacon, Egg & Cheese biscuit (ham or sausage can be subbed for the bacon, and there's "veggie sausage" available, too). Other favorites:

  • The Fried Green Tomato biscuit with pimento cheese or hot honey butter, if you're going all in on Southern classics.
  • The Chix & Grits box if you want crispy, meaty and well-seasoned fried chicken tenders.
  • The Sweet Country Blues glazed blueberry biscuit for a sweet treat.
  • Iced Counter Culture Coffee — also from Durham — if you want to avoid a food-induced nap.

If you go: Customers can order from a kiosk and grab a seat, and the restaurant is equipped with a heated locker system for takeout and delivery orders.

The bottom line: Rise doesn't claim to be a healthy or light breakfast option, but it will leave you satisfied with a taste of the South.
