The San Diego Zoo's hippos moved into their upgraded home, and they're ready to show it off.

Why it matters: Visitors can now see Funani, 39, and her 4-year-old daughter, Amahle, in the new Hippo Trail habitat at the zoo after a monthslong renovation.

Zoom in: The refurbished habitat caters to the hippos' amphibious nature — living on land and underwater — and will offer new interactive experiences for visitors.

  • 110 feet of crystal-clear glass allows guests to see the hippos underwater.
  • A new deck gives visitors a behind-the-scenes look from above.

Fun fact: Despite living most of their life in the water, and sleeping underwater, hippos can't swim. They move around like "aquatic ballet dancers," slowly galloping or pushing off the floor, according to the zoo.
