The San Diego Clippers are back. Kinda.

The big picture: Nearly 40 years after the NBA's Clippers left San Diego for Los Angeles, the franchise announced Monday its minor league team will move to San Diego County and rebrand under its old name.

The fine print: The reconstituted San Diego Clippers won't be returning to their old home at Pechanga Arena.

  • Instead, they'll become a marquee tenant of Oceanside's new Frontwave Arena, expected to open in September.
  • The 7,500-seat arena will also be the new home of the San Diego Sockers indoor soccer team.
  • A private group — which includes Sudberry Properties, developers of the nearby El Corazon projects — is building the $85 million arena, the Union-Tribune reported last year.

Zoom in: The G League — the NBA's developmental minor league — has 31 teams, 29 of which have direct relationships with parent teams in the NBA, similar to minor league baseball.

  • At the start of this season, 50% of NBA players had appeared on a G League roster at one point, an all-time high.
