San Diego lawmakers seek Tax Day extension due to floods

U.S. Rep. Sara Jacobs (D-San Diego) and other lawmakers are "urgently" asking the IRS to delay tax deadline for San Diego County residents affected by the catastrophic January floods, per a letter shared exclusively with Axios.

Why it matters: An extension would offer some relief to San Diegans who are still recovering from the severe storms that damaged property and threatened lives across the region.

The fine print: Jacobs and her Democratic colleagues sent a letter Thursday to the IRS commissioner asking to extend the April 15 federal tax deadline to June 17 for San Diegans.

The big picture: Earlier this week, President Biden declared the floods a "major disaster," unlocking federal recovery funds.

The proposed date matches the tax relief offered after similar federal disaster declarations, the letter says.
The additional time would allow individuals, families and businesses to address their damages "without the pressure of a looming federal tax filing deadline" that many are "unprepared and unable to meet," according to the letter signed by U.S. Reps. Juan Vargas, Scott Peters and Mike Levin.

Between the lines: The IRS should automatically authorize tax relief and an extension for disaster victims to file returns and pay taxes following the FEMA disaster declaration.

Yes, but: That hasn't happened for San Diego yet, which spurred the letter, according to Jacobs' office.
