Pitt faces first test at Virginia Tech

The undefeated Pitt Panthers will see their first real challenge on Friday as they face the Virginia Tech Hokies on the road.

Why it matters: Pitt is hoping to keep the momentum going after a winning season last year and impress a national audience in primetime.

Zoom in: The Panthers are 4-0, defeating Miami University of Ohio, University of Central Florida, Syracuse and Bucknell to start the season.

Zoom out: Virginia Tech is also 4-0, setting up a battle of unbeatens.

Between the lines: The Panthers are unranked, despite their hot start.

A win against a quality opponent like Virginia Tech would likely catapult them into the national rankings.

State of play: The run game could be a deciding factor.

Pitt has only allowed about 53 yards per game on the ground, the fourth-best run defense in the nation.
Virginia Tech running back Jeffrey Overton Jr. is one of the best in the nation, and the Hokies average 177 run yards per game.

What to watch for: Pitt's wide receivers are all talented, so look for them to make some deep catches and ignite the Panthers' offense.

Tune in on ESPN at 7pm on Friday.
