Trump praises Giant Eagle promotional price cuts

President Trump tipped his cap to local grocery chain Giant Eagle on Sunday night over a promotional price cut.
The big picture: As grocery prices have increased amid Trump's tariffs, the Iran war and supply shocks, the president praised Giant Eagle for its temporary price cuts on 300 products.
- The promotion launched July 9 and lasts through Sept. 9.
What they're saying: "I have just been informed that Giant Eagle, a GREAT American Grocery Company, will be lowering Prices, by a lot, across more than 300 products this Summer, through Labor Day, to help hardworking American families," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
- "Giant Eagle, like Walmart, is stepping up in a big and bold way to answer my call to lower costs for working families."
Giant Eagle spokesperson Jannah Drexler responded in a statement: "We are aware of the President's message in support of the On Sale This Season pricing initiative Giant Eagle launched on July 9. More information about the initiative can be found by reading our announcement press release here. We look forward to this program helping our customers save all summer long."
Between the lines: The company took lessons from its sale last fall and applied them to this summer's sale, according to TribLive.
Flashback: Trump praised Walmart for price cuts earlier this month, attributing the cost reductions to a request by his administration.
Zoom in: This promotion reduces prices on items like ground beef, red seedless grapes, Jif peanut butter, and Cheez-It crackers.
Zoom out: Based in Cranberry, Giant Eagle operates about 200 stores in Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana.
By the numbers: The Akron Beacon Journal found in February that Giant Eagle averaged $34.30 for 10 typical grocery items in Akron, Ohio, higher than Aldi ($25.85), Acme ($25.90) and Walmart ($28.37).
What's next: Kroger is in the process of purchasing Giant Eagle for $1.65 billion.
- Giant Eagle stores will keep the Giant Eagle name, retain the myPerks program, and the local headquarters will stay in Cranberry, Kroger told Axios earlier this month.
