Parkway East bridge project could reopen early

The Parkway East could reopen as early as the middle of next week if everything goes to plan, PennDOT officials said Monday.
Why it matters: That would mean the $95 million bridge replacement project that's closed one of Pittsburgh's busiest highways would reopen about a week ahead of schedule.
- The project was originally scheduled to last 25 days and be completed by Aug. 3.
Zoom in: The 22-million-pound Commercial Street Bridge started sliding into place around 10am Sunday, and then moved almost completely into position by 6pm, per PennDOT.
- It has about 6 more feet to slide and then lower into place, PennDOT officials said Monday.
The bottom line: Weather could play a factor and delay a potential early opening.
- Crews still have to pave and apply a coating on the pavement, and forecast rain might slow that progress, officials said.
