Heinz History Center expansion takes shape

The Heinz History Center broke ground Thursday on its 92,000-square-foot expansion.
Why it matters: The $80 million project will boost capacity, add exhibits and help position the Smithsonian-affiliated museum as a top draw for tourists and visitors.
Zoom in: Plans include a transformed first-floor Great Hall with café and 150-seat theater for programs, screenings and an orientation film complementing the Visit Pittsburgh Welcome Center.
- A new outdoor space on 13th Street and Penn Avenue called Penn Avenue Plaza will showcase large pieces of Pittsburgh's industrial and military history, including a steel ladle and a Civil War-era Rodman cannon.
- New spaces for private and public events, including an 8,500-square-foot outdoor terrace.
- A new fourth-floor Museum of African American History dedicated to exploring the Black experience and its role in shaping the region.
- Interactive Fred Rogers exhibit featuring "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" sets and artifacts, updates to the Franco Harris Sports Museum and expanded galleries showcasing the Italian American Program and Rauh Jewish Archives.
- Smart classrooms that will help accommodate a 50% increase in school field trips.
What's next: The expansion is set for completion in 2028.
