Penn Hills' new retro tech museum opens for tours

Penn Hills' long-awaited retro tech museum is now open for limited-capacity tours.

The big picture: After months of renovations and exhibit buildout, the Bloop Museum in the former Penn Hills Municipal Building is opening in phases — first debuting early computing displays and a re-created '80s living room (think plaid couches, a console TV and Atari 2600).

Catch up quick: The nonprofit purchased the 40,000-square-foot space at 12245 Frankstown Road last year with plans for a museum dedicated to electronic entertainment history.

Founder Brendan Becker relocated his collection of tens of thousands of artifacts from Baltimore to Pittsburgh.

How it works: Walk-in tours are welcome on Wednesdays from 10am-6pm.

Tours are free, but donations are appreciated to support expanded exhibits, educational programs, and more immersive experiences.

What's next: More exhibits, including a video game history showcase and a recreated '90s kids' bedroom, are in the works as the museum continues to roll out.
