TribLive to expand city coverage with new hires

The big picture: TribLive executive editor Luis Fabregas tells Axios the paper is hiring five to seven reporters to cover Pittsburgh and Allegheny County.

• New hires will work from TribLive's offices in the North Shore's Clark Building.

Context: TribLive prints two papers in the region: one based in Greensburg covering mostly Westmoreland County, and another based in Tarentum largely covering the Alle-Kiski Valley.

• The Trib already has a team based in Pittsburgh, covering local government, development, business, food, courts, public safety and more.

What they're saying: "We have received and been overwhelmed by the amount of resumes. And not just in Pittsburgh — from all over the country," says Fabregas.

• Losing a newsroom is "not something to celebrate," he says, adding that his thoughts are with his colleagues following news that the Post-Gazette plans to close in May.
• "Our goal is to make sure that Pittsburgh still has robust local coverage," he says.

What's next: TribLive is starting a new weekend print edition in May centered on the city and Allegheny County.

• It will be published on Saturdays.
• If there's strong demand for the weekend edition, Fabregas says the paper will look to hire more local reporters.
