There are more ways to enjoy the snow than going downhill.
Why it matters: It can be more challenging and frustrating than downhill skiing, but cross-country skiing is much cheaper and provides a quiet solitude that is hard to replicate.
❄️ The intrigue: Despite its hilly reputation, Western Pennsylvania provides several opportunities to cross-country ski.
🎿 Pro-tip: First-timers should go to the Laurel Ridge Cross Country Ski Center in Rockwood near Ohiopyle, just over an hour from Pittsburgh.
- Ski, boot and pole rentals are available in the small, but cozy lodge (trail fee $15, ski and boot rental $20).
- Free lessons are available, but you have to schedule ahead of time.
- Trails are well groomed and manageable, and enough people are around on the weekends to help you if you need it.
- Use the tracks on the side of each trail. They make it easier to slide your skis.
💭 Ryan's thought bubble: The skis were much lighter than I thought, making it easy to get the hang of the diagonal stride or herringbone steps.
