The stars are aligning for Pittsburgh in an unprecedented manner.
Why it matters: Infrastructure improvements, massive events and returning crowds this year will inject hundreds of millions in economic impact into a city and region that are wading through budget issues.
The big picture: The city will open a new park and a music venue.
- This summer, it will hold events related to the FIFA World Cup, the nation's 250th birthday and the quadrennial Carnegie International arts festival.
- It's hosting the NFL Draft in April, arguably the biggest public event the region has ever hosted.
What they're saying: "We are gearing up for a historic year in Allegheny County. It's exciting to know we'll be featured on a global stage and building improved public assets not only to be enjoyed by tourists but by everyone who calls the Pittsburgh area home," Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato tells Axios.
Yes, but: The events might push the region's hosting capacity to its limits.
Here's the rundown for our momentous 2026.
π NFL Draft and other sports
Organizers expect 500,000 to 700,000 visitors to descend on Pittsburgh for the draft, in what will be the largest sporting event in the region's history.
- The three-day event will take place April 23-25 at Acrisure Stadium.
Also this spring, a public plaza with a large viewing screen will open on Mazeroski Way across from PNC Park.
In June and July, Pittsburgh will host a World Cup hub for watch parties during the global soccer tournament, Visit PA officials told Axios last year.
- An exact location hasn't been announced yet.
π More train service
Amtrak is on track to add a second daily train between Pittsburgh and Harrisburg and points beyond sometime this year.
- The route won't be upgraded to high-speed, but will add reliability for train travel across the state, officials have said.
- PennDOT spokesperson Erin Waters-Trasatt told Axios they're targeting late 2026 to start the second train.
πΊπΈ Happy Birthday, America
Point State Park is hosting a big, free concert on June 27 as part of the state's celebrations for the nation's 250th anniversary.
- Cassandra Coleman, executive director of America250PA, told Axios she expects crowds between 20,000 and 30,000 and said performers will be announced sometime early this year.
Anthrocon, the country's premier furry celebration, will be in town again July 2-5 for its 30th annual convention.
π¨ Big year for the arts
The once-every-four-years Carnegie International exhibition returns to Pittsburgh and will expand significantly.
- Held between May 2, 2026, and Jan. 3, 2027, it will move beyond the Carnegie Museum of Art this year and showcase exhibits at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, Kamin Science Center, Mattress Factory and Thelma Lovette YMCA in the Hill District.
The Three Rivers Arts Festival will move to Pittsburgh's newest public park, Arts Landing in the Cultural District β which will open ahead of the NFL Draft.
- The festival takes place June 5-7 and June 11-14.
πΆ More music
Citizens Live at The Wylie β a 4,000-seat entertainment venue next to PPG Paints Arena β will open sometime in 2026.
Country music megastar Morgan Wallen, one of the region's top Spotify artists, is returning to Pittsburgh for the first time since 2023, playing two shows at Acrisure on June 5-6.
The bottom line: Outside of NFL Draft days, target July 4th for a buzzy weekend full of splendor, said Jim Britt of Visit Pittsburgh.
- The newly crowned champion Riverhounds will host a soccer match, the city will put on its fantastic fireworks display, you can mingle with furries, and fans can catch a World Cup match at the watch party hub.
